The Philosophy Research Group of the Center for Philosophical and Humanistic Studies (CEFH) of the UCP (FFCS), in partnership with the Department of Physics of UM, is promoting the INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINAR “Philosophy of Nature: Frontier Issues between Physics and Philosophy“.
The third session, “What is the Time?”, will take place on October 6, 2017, at 10:30 am, at the Auditorium Isidro Alves, Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences of UCP. The speakers are Prof. Dr. Jaime Santos (CFUM) and Prof. Dr. Álvaro Balsas (UCP).
This session on “What is Time?” aims to address the concept (s) of time in current physical theories, with particular emphasis on Thermodynamics and Relativity Theory, as well as the underlying metaphysical and philosophical assumptions , trying to answer such questions as: Is Time finite or infinite? Is it linear or circular? Has a beginning and an end? What is its relation to the concepts of space, determinism, causality, reversibility, emergence, and initial conditions of physical laws? What is the relation of the time arrow to the notions of past, future, memory, information, and thermal death of the Universe?
