Biographical note and Research Interests

Maria José de Araújo Ferreira Lopes holds a degree in Humanities from the Faculty of Philosophy of Braga of the UCP (1989), where she also concluded, in the area of ​​Latin Literature, under the supervision of Professor Américo da Costa Ramalho, her Proficiency in Science and Pedagogical Aptitude (1997) and her PhD, co-oriented by Professor Amadeu Torres (“Estudo histórico, literário e linguístico da obra Commentarii rerum gestarum in India citra Gangem a Lusitanis anno 1538 de Damião de Góis”, 2007). She has been a lecturer of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences since 1990, having lectured several CUs, mainly in the area of ​​Classical Studies, History of the Portuguese Language and Portuguese Culture. Member of the Center for Philosophical and Humanistic Studies, her research involves the Latin Language and Literature (also of the Renaissance), Roman Culture and History, Classical Mythology and Portuguese Literature and Culture (classical influences on Portuguese authors; Latin works of the 16th century on the Portuguese Expansion). She is an integrated member of the International Network of Scientific Excellence EVROPA RENASCENS.

Her current research is mainly related to the Topic 3 of the CEFH – Symbolic interactions: memory and change: topics of Latin historiography (visions of the Other, representations of Women); representations of Death in poets of the Golden and Silver Ages of the Latin Literature; reception of Latin authors (e.g. Marcial, Lucano, Tacitus) but also of the Greek tragic poets in the peninsular and Portuguese culture and literature; the literature of sentences and its presence in authors like Camilo Castelo Branco, among others.
